Vent pipes are installed throughout your home to allow gasses and heat to escape through your roof. Like other exterior portions of your home, the vent pipes – specifically the boots and collars placed on the vent pipes, are exposed to extreme temperature and weather changes. Over the years, as the life expectancy of the boot or collar declines and the unit itself wears out, the homeowner is bound to experience leaks into the attic and even into the interior of the home if enough water has pooled inside of your attic. It is best to have your roof inspected in the early fall, as late fall, winter, and spring often bring heavy amounts of precipitation in our central NJ region.

Brothers Roofing recently completed another roofing repair and seamless gutter project in Ewing, NJ. The homeowner called and requested numerous repairs to his aging slate roof as well installation of new seamless gutters. Various precautions were taken during the roof repair as the slate roof itself was rather brittle - it was aged and was due for replacement. We must say that given the age of the roof, the slate shingles had retained their colors very well. Before we could tackle the seamless gutters, we found that numerous areas of fascia needed to be replaced as they had been compromised. We replaced the rotten wood with synthetic boards and the proceeded to wrap them with aluminum. Synthetic boards are a fantastic substitute for wood...

The summer has gone by very quickly and Brothers Roofing was very busy performing numerous roofing repairs and roof installations throughout the Central New Jersey regions. The cities of Hamilton, Lawrenceville, Trenton, Princeton, Ewing, West Windsor as well as others in Mercer County were common grounds for much of our work. We took on both residential and commercial customers.
One recent job that stands out is an emergency repair that we performed at a local (privately owned) paint store here in Hamilton Township, NJ. The owner contacted us and informed us that he had a fairly large amount of water coming into the store and needed repairs ASAP before more damage would occur inside.
Upon further examination we found:

As summer approaches here in the state of New Jersey, it is important to discuss the impact severe weather may have on your existing roof with primary focus on hail and the damage it can cause . Your roof is the home's first line of defense against the elements - it battles ever changing temperatures, wind, rain, snow, and hail year round. When the weather changes and hail suddenly strikes during the summer months, your roof may suffer instant hail damage . This is especially the case for older roofs that have not been replaced or may have needed replacement in the future. If your roof has sustained damage, it may be necessary to perform roof repairs or even a roof replacement - depending on the severity of the damage.

Fixing a leak can be a tricky roof repair as the cause is not always easy to detect. A leak will usually be the first sign of the need for roof repairs, but the location of the leak may not necessarily indicate the area that is damaged on your roof. Damaged or not properly installed roofing shingles allow water to run down your roof and accumulate in an area often several feet from the damaged shingles. This may further cause damage to the roofing and sub-roofing materials. A proper roofing inspection needs to be performed to find the cause of the leak and fix the damage in a proper way. The worst thing a homeowner can do is not address a leak before winter weather sets in, especially given that more often than not the repair nee...

Our roof is the first line of defense that protects the home against the elements. Year round, the roof is battered by the sun, wind, and rain. Having said that, winter is especially hard on your home's roof because of the extremes it threatens with -high winds, snow fall, rain, and drastic temperature changes. All of these factors force your roof to work overtime to properly protect your home. For the roof to be properly effective, it needs to be inspected before these weather patterns takes place to make sure there are not any "weak" areas such as missing shingles, damaged flashing, or missing chimney caps that could cause your roof to become damaged during the winter months.

The winter months are a harsh time of the year for your roof - sudden temperature changes, precipitation from rain to snow, as well as high winds will put your roof to the test. Pipe flashing is a common area that tends to fail during the winter months. This is especially the case toward the end of the useful life of the pipe flashing itself as the unit is not longer able to properly protect the pipe. A loose or cracked pipe jack flashing often leads to water damage to the inside of the home. It can also lead to further damage to your roof - roofing shingles can peel thus exposing sheathing, which can soften thanks to the leak thus impacting structural rigidity of the roof.
Though some individuals...
