As summer approaches here in the state of New Jersey, it is important to discuss the impact severe weather may have on your existing roof with primary focus on hail and the damage it can cause . Your roof is the home's first line of defense against the elements - it battles ever changing temperatures, wind, rain, snow, and hail year round. When the weather changes and hail suddenly strikes during the summer months, your roof may suffer instant hail damage . This is especially the case for older roofs that have not been replaced or may have needed replacement in the future. If your roof has sustained damage, it may be necessary to perform roof repairs or even a roof replacement - depending on the severity of the damage.

Roof Repairs after Hail Damage

Depending on its size, hail can be harmless or a large threat to your roof. On average, hail starting at about .5" all the way up to golf ball sized and beyond can cause damage to your roof. Below are several examples of roofing damage that can occur during a hail storm:

  • Bruised asphalt shingles
  • Missing granules (top layer of asphalt shingles)
  • Cracked or loose shingles
  • Damage to underlayment if shingles were initially missing or damaged
  • Metal damage (roof vents, flashing)
  • Damage to skylights and attic fans

As some of these items are not easily visible, it is important to hire a roofing contractor for a post hail storm inspection. If you do believe that damage has occurred, do not wait to file an insurance claim with your insurance provider while immediately contacting a qualified roofing professional to prevent any further possible damage that could take place to your roof.
